Area Lakes

While you are in Murphy, NC, there are two lakes nearby.  Here’s how the two lakes compare and why they’re both worth a visit (or more):

  • Proximity: Hiwassee is very close to Murphy — only a few miles — making it very accessible for day trips. Chatuge is also nearby, especially for folks who don’t mind a short drive into Georgia or across to NC’s Clay County.

  • Feel: Hiwassee tends to feel more secluded, quieter, and more rugged in places (with more natural shoreline, forest surroundings). Chatuge has more developed areas, public amenities, and more community/tourist infrastructure.

  • Recreation variety: If you want peace, nature trails, quiet fishing, Hiwassee might be more your style. If you want more diverse amenities (beaches, more public access, swimming, organized spots for boating, possibly some lakefront shops or services), Chatuge offers that.

  • Scenic beauty: Both offer mountain and forested scenery, stunning lake views, especially in mornings and evenings, and lots of photo-worthy spots.
